Finishing is one of the most essential fundamental skill involved in football .If you think about it, the main motive of a football team is to score more goals and win the match. So here are five essential football drills which you should include in your training plan to become a more clinical striker.

SOME BASIC POINTS:-

  1. Always try to aim for the corners. These areas as you may be knowing, is difficult for goalkeepers to save.

  2. Try to hit the ball near the center. The center of the ball is the sweet spot which gives great power as well as accuracy.

  3. Look at the ball while shooting. While shooting , you need to look at the ball and concentrate on the center point of the ball( the point where you will hit ). But make sure to take a glance at the goal before few steps of the run up and locate where the goalkeeper is standing to decide where you aim to shoot.

  4. Grounded shots are better than aerial shots Always remember that grounded shots are more difficult to save than aerial shots. Why? Because aerial shots are generally in the range where goalkeepers can save a goal with their hands(unless it is one of the top corners). But grounded shots are difficult to save as the goalkeeper as to stretch out and he/she takes more time to save a goal.

  5. Always setup the shot take a nice touch before going for the shot. The touch should neither be too long nor too shot. Approximately 2 feet long touch will help you with your accuracy and power.

  6. Always shoot when it is the best option. go for the shot when you are in the best position to score. If someone else is in much better position, make sure to pass.

IT IS SUGGESTED TO PLACE TWO MARKERS IN THE GOAL POST. ONE EACH NEAR BOTH THE SIDEPOSTS(approximately four feat apart from the post). THIS MARKS THE AREA WHERE YOU SHOULD BE AIMING FOR.

Lets jump into the essential finishing football drills which will help you score more goals and become a better striker.

  1. THE STEPOVER AND SHOOT

Stepover and shoot

This football drill helps you master the stepover as well as improve your finishing. To perform this drill, you just need a single marker. No problem if you don’t have a football training marker. You can always use a water bottle to replace the football marker in this drill.

Here are the steps for the football drill:-

  1. Start the drill from approximately three steps behind the training marker. Dribble towards it by taking short touches.

  2. Take a stepover and cut towards the inside as you approach the marker.

  3. Take a glance towards the goal and mark your target

  4. BHOOM.. Take the shot.

Make sure to practice this with both the foots.

  1. THE ONE TOUCH SHOOT

The one touch and shot

This drill helps you “imitate” a match like situation. It is really simple. For this drill you need two markers or which you can use as a marker. Place the two cone horizontally at least three steps apart.

Steps for the drill:-

We will take example of the right foot to explain this drill...

  1. Start near the left marker and take a touch towards the right side.

  2. When the ball is between the markers, take a glance at the goal and go for the shot. As simple as that.

Again make sure to practice with both your left and right foot.

4.THE SQUARE DRILL

Now coming back to the finishing drill.

Here are the steps for the drill:-

  1. Shoot the ball high up in the air while standing inside the box.

  2. As the ball comes down, take a direction touch and turn towards the goal.

  3. You can take one more touch and shoot

Tip:- Make sure to take a glance towards the goal and locate the goalkeeper before shooting.

  1. “BACK TO GOAL” DRILL

The back to goal drill

I could not come up with a better name so I request you to bear with it. This is a relatively simple football drill. To perform this drill, you just need a single football training cone/marker. Place the marker to the right or left side, just outside the thirty yard box.

Here are the steps for the drill:-

  1. Start with your back towards the goal and the ball at your feet.

  2. Turn quickly, take a glance and shoot.

  3. It is suggested to do a little fake, body feint or stepover before turning. This will help you a lot in match situations.

Try to work maximum with your accuracy in this football drill since this is relative simple when compared to others.

Always try to aim for the far corner when shooting diagonally from left or right side. Because when you set up for a shot, say towards the right side, the goalkeeper comes to the left side of the goal to cover the near post. This leaves the far post open for you.

DRIBBLE AND SHOOT

Dribble and shoot

this works with your dribbling and finishing. to perform this drill, you need at least five markers. Again, consider buying the markers from the amazon link given above/ Players must run through the cones with the ball under control.

When they reach the final cone they have one final touch to set the ball and then they must shoot into the far corner.

After shooting players collect the other players' ball and then dribble to the back of the other line.

Steps for the drill

1.Players must run through the cones with the ball under control.

2.When they reach the final cone they have one final touch to set the ball and then they must shoot into the far corner.

After shooting players collect the other players' ball and then dribble to the back of the other line.

Make sure to practice these drills regularly to become a better striker.

Practice is the key. Repetition will help you score more goals and stand out on the pitch.
